Bits & Pieces / Home Sweet Home

In this lovely collage by Karen “inkspired” Kloberdans, several birds are perched among flowering branches and butterflies are floating nearby. The vibrant cover on this issue of RSM was also created by Karen.

The largest birds in the scene are images from a paper napkin Karen prepared for collaging using a faux rice paper technique. (How-to instructions for making faux rice paper are included with the Collage story.) The dimensional flowers were punched out of different colored cardstock, and individual sections were layered one over the other.

Karen used blue ink on several stamped images because she felt “the scene needed a contrasting color for balance.” She also wanted to bring out the blue in the birds. The “Home Sweet Home” sentiment is slightly raised off the surface, adding depth. A layer of Mod Podge brushed over the piece adds shine. When attaching ephemera to her scene, Karen prefers Aleene’s Tacky Glue.
